Coach Ron’s Bio

Who am I, and what makes me qualified to write about improving kids’ athletic abilities for competitive sports like soccer?

Ron UsherI have a simple philosophy: All kids have the potential to be athletes – and should continue to be so throughout their lives.

I’m Ron Usher, coach, teacher, lecturer, and a specialist in the field of athletics. But as a father, I know how hard it can be to motivate your own child.  I had a 14-year-old who was less than enthusiastic about sports – so this is an issue close to my heart.

With my BA and MA in kinesiology (San Jose State University) and my background in coaching everything from high school to college to masters, I’m constantly on the lookout for cutting edge information for athletes. I dig through websites, study text books, attend lectures and seminars to find techniques I can use. But most of what I find is geared towards elite athletes.

The challenge is making these training workouts accessible to kids. And here is where my experience teaching sixth graders, coaching seventh grade soccer, and working with ADD/ADHD students comes into play. Not only am I familiar with the physical capabilities and limitations kids have, but I know what makes them tick when it comes to engaging them in sports.

I took these intense athletic training techniques for adults and “kidified” them. The result?  Workouts which are social and fun while improving kids’ strength, coordination skills, and body movement.

I’ve used these techniques on my own son and had incredible success. Is he a soccer star?  No, he’s not. But he likes working out and has greatly improved his athletic skills – and to me that’s what’s important.
